A former Lexingtonian has been named publisher of a New Hampshire newspaper. John Winn Miller, 57, will become the next publisher of the Concord Monitor, a Pulitzer Prize-winning daily paper with a circulation of about 20,000 in the state’s capital. Read the rest of this entry

Retired newspaper owner and publisher John Howell Wolf, 92, of Carlisle died Sunday.
He owned and published eight community newspapers in the Cincinnati area before selling them and retiring to a cottage on Lake Carnico in Nicholas County in 1983.

In an attempt to raise awareness about rural Kentucky’s health and health care challenges, the Kentucky Rural Health Association has announced it will begin sponsoring an annual newspaper reporting awards program. The purpose of the awards program is to encourage print media outlets to bring attention to Kentucky’s health-related issues.

David Dick, an Emmy-winning television reporter for CBS News who became a journalism educator and author and helped start a weekly newspaper in his home Bluegrass horse country, died July 16 at his home in Plum Lick, Ky., after a 17-year battle with prostate cancer. The Kentucky Court of Appeals has declined to rehear a case in which it ruled against Lexington over the city’s attempt to close a January 2008 Urban County Council meeting.
The meeting was scheduled to discuss the city’s response to Kentucky American Water’s request to the state Public Service Commission to build a $162 million treatment plant and pipeline. The request was ultimately approved.

PIKEVILLE — Appalachian News-Express Editor Jerry Boggs said he will not press assault charges against Pikeville Mayor Frank Justice II.
On Wednesday, Boggs filed a criminal complaint with the Pike County attorney’s office that said Justice confronted him at a sports bar about a story the newspaper was printing. Boggs said Justice punched him in the face.
