More than 860 Kentucky high school journalism students and teachers heard former AP Middle East bureau chief Terry Anderson, held hostage by Lebanese militants for nearly seven years beginning in 1985, deliver the keynote address at the 2009 Kentucky High School Journalism Association convention on April 15. Students from the University of Kentucky and Western Kentucky University dominated this year’s SPJ Mark of Excellence competition for student journalists in Region 5: Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois, a region that includes other well-known J-schools such as Northwestern and Indiana. Following are the pertinent newspaper categories, with Kentucky students italicized, including one for the newspaper at Eastern. The first-place winners (nine from UK, two from WKU) go on to the national competition.

I’ve got a question for you, as usual. I am looking at purchasing two Mac Pros for the office, plus a Mac Pro laptop. I noticed there is about $500 difference between a Mac Pro 2.8 GHz quad core Xeon processor and a Mac Pro 2.8 GHz 2-quad core Xeon processor. NAA’s Presstime magazine asked 10 people to imagine they’re starting a print newspaper print from scratch. What stays, and what goes (sections, beats, days published, classified ads)? How would they rethink the parts they keep? Designer Mario Garcia says: “Starting a newspaper from scratch, I may consider doing a robust Sunday edition, then creating the ultimate online newspaper for daily. I may even consider a very short, one-section, printed daily edition, but acting more like a companion to the online than a self-standing newspaper.”
