Peter Baniak, editor and vice president of the Lexington Herald-Leader, has been elected to the KPA/KPS Board of Directors to fill an unexpired term.
The special election was necessitated with the resignation of Wayne Snow, vice president/advertising, of the Lexington Herald-Leader. He’s now the general manager of cleveland.com.
The current term ends in January, 2011, and the district will then have an election for a full three-year Board term.

KPA has received this message from NNA concerning the USPS idea of cutting to five-day delivery.
Sen. Jon Tester, D-MT, used his position on Senate Appropriations last week to block efforts to end Saturday mail delivery this fiscal year. We appreciate the efforts of our Montana members in helping Sen. Tester to solidify his belief in the importance of community newspapers in rural America.

Experts tell postal regulatory commission ending Saturday mail will harm small town America
The Postal Service has failed to take into account the effect of the loss of Saturday mail delivery upon small town America, and has overlooked new competition it will spur from newspaper carrier forces if it drops Saturdays, National Newspaper Association witnesses told the Postal Regulatory Commission today.

Does your classified page line up with a color unit on the press?
If it does, here’s a way to boost revenue and add impact to ads.
I noticed this feature in the classified pages of the Cleveland (Ohio)
Plain Dealer. The paper allows advertisers to run yellow tint screens over
personal or commercial liner ads. It’s a tremendous service because the

Tuesday, July 27, the National Newspaper Association as a member of the nationwide Affordable Mail Alliance (AMA) of nearly 700 companies and associations that use the United States mail to call for the Postal Regulatory Commission to promptly dismiss a request for a major postage rate increase. Almost 500 – more than 70 percent – of those companies are newspapers and press associations!

In an attempt to raise awareness about rural Kentucky’s health and health care challenges, the Kentucky Rural Health Association has announced it will begin sponsoring an annual newspaper reporting awards program. The purpose of the awards program is to encourage print media outlets to bring attention to Kentucky’s health-related issues.

Late nights, new towns, never-ending workloads.
Sounds like a typical college student’s life. Well, for the KPA interns – this summer has been a learning experience all its own.
This summer 23 college students were given the opportunity to intern at newspapers and associate member’s offices across Kentucky.

David Dick, an Emmy-winning television reporter for CBS News who became a journalism educator and author and helped start a weekly newspaper in his home Bluegrass horse country, died July 16 at his home in Plum Lick, Ky., after a 17-year battle with prostate cancer. He was 80.
